Research: smokers are (slightly) at higher risk for developing bipolar disorder  

In de Volkskrant of 30 September 2019, the causality between smoking and the development of psychological disorders is discussed. The reason for the discussion is a newly published article in the British Journal of Psychiatry by APH researcher Jentien Vermeulen. The promotion research puts forward that people who start smoking have a 1.5 to 2 times higher risk of developing a bipolar disorder. Vermeulen used an innovative method, in which the genetic information of one million people was screened from a public database.
