On March 22nd 2019 APH researcher and Professor of Epidemiology Joline Beulens held her inaugural lecture, titled ‘Voorkomen is beter dan genezen’ (prevention is better than cure). The subject was the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, the chronic disease whose prevalence is predicted to increase dramatically over the coming years. The cause of this growth is the high number of people with a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, such as older age, overweight and a unhealthy lifestyle. Additionally, the long term effect of life style interventions are ineffective as the role of environmental risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus are not taken into account. Beulens argues to find an approach that focuses on the society as a whole; for example price changes on food products and a different design of our living environment. Furthermore, Beulens pleads for a more effective, individualized treatment and screening of diabetes to lower health care costs and to make it more efficient.
