As of April 2020, Marcel Adriaanse is the new program leader of Health Behaviors & Chronic Diseases (HBCD). Marcel will take over this role from Karien Stronks, who has fulfilled this role since APH was founded in 2016. Marcel will lead the HBCD program alongside Hidde van der Ploeg.
Marcel is assistant professor at the department of Health Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and has years of teaching experience in health promotion and disease prevention. He holds a PhD on psychological aspects of screening for type 2 diabetes (Hoorn Study, 2004) from the VU and a Master in health sciences (1995) from Maastricht University.
His main research and education is directed to lifestyle (intervention) studies that relate to chronic disorders in different settings. Current projects focus on a) medication adherence in people with cardiovascular risk management , b) lifestyle interventions among people with serious mental illness and c) smoking cessation among people with serious mental illness.
Marcel has been affiliated with our research institute since 1999 and has been a valued member of the Science Committee of APH's predecessor EMGO+ for many years.
We are delighted that Marcel will strengthen the institute as a program leader of HBCD and wish him every success in his new role.
