APH researcher Dr. Femke Rutters, from the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, location VUMC, was granted a Senior Fellowship by the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation for her project entitled: ‘Effects of irregular sleep timing on glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity’ (€324.634).
Research shows that almost half of the adults have irregular sleep patterns, with big differences between week and weekend days. Additionally, people do not get enough sleep. These two factors increase the risk on developing diabetes type II. The research of dr Rutters focusses on the 'why' of this finding. She will examine if the blood sugar levels in people with diabetes are higher if they sleep irregularly, and if this will improve if people are going to sleep regularly again.
