Amsterdam Public Health bases its scientific efforts on their clinical and societal relevance. Health and health care are undergoing major transformations with a shift of health care to the municipal level, a changed focus from intramural care to transmural chains of care and extramural (self) care settings. Challenges like the aging and diverse (working) population with increased life expectancy and (multiple) chronic health problems with rising health care costs necessitate the generation, dissemination, and translation of new knowledge based on sound research.

Eight research programs strengthen the healthcare system and safeguard its sustainability, assist health care professionals in maintaining and improving their performance, and empower patients and citizens in managing their health: Health Behaviors & Chronic Diseases, Mental Health, Societal Participation & Health, Global Health, Quality of Care, Personalized Medicine, Aging & Later Life and Methodology.
