The Amsterdam UMC Fellowship (€750.000) has been awarded to dr. Onno Holleboom, internist-endocrinologist (and soon also vascular medicine) at location AMC.
In concurrence with obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2, the incidence of progressive forms of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with advanced liver fibrosis is increasing. To better address and study this epidemiological development, Onno Holleboom has initiated outpatient clinics and a cohort study for patients with NAFLD at both locations of the Amsterdam UMC, together with profs. Max Nieuwdorp and Ulrich Beuers and dr. Sandjai Ramsoekh.
The awarded research proposal will address an understudied patho-process in NAFLD: lipophagy, or the turnover of lipid droplets through fusion with lysosomes. Insights from inborn errors of metabolism and state-of-the-art cell and animal models will be applied to identify innovative and effective treatments for NAFLD.
