Judith Boel studies cognitive functioning and psychiatric symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Deep brain stimulation is used to treat patients in advanced stages of the disease. One of the aspects Boel investigates is whether deep brain stimulation of the internal globus pallidus, (a subcortical structure of the brain) or the subthalamic nucleus is associated with more side effects affecting cognitive, psychiatric and social functioning.
