PYRAPREG: new treatment option for malaria in pregnancy

Dr. Petra Mens and Dr. Henk Schallig (Department Medical Microbiology) have received, together with partners in Mali (Prof. Kassoum Kayentao - coordinator), Burkina Faso, DR Congo, Mozambique, The Gambia, Spain and The Netherlands (AMC and NKI), a grant from the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) to study the efficacy and safety of a newly registered artemisinin-based combination therapy (pyronaridine-artesunate – Pyramax®). The PyraPreg project aims to establish whether pyronaridine-artesunate presents an alternative treatment option for African pregnant women (2nd or 3rd trimester) with uncomplicated falciparum malaria. EDCTP invests more than EUR 7 million in the project.
