Running for research

On October 9th 2018, the research of Laurien Buffart, researcher at Amsterdam UMC, Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA), was declared the official cause of this year’s edition of the TCS marathon by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Amsterdam UMC, Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA).

Through her research Buffart aims to find the answer whether physical training combined with special nutrition advice during chemotherapy positively contributes to surviving cancer. Buffart says that “if it turns out that physical training during treatment of chemotherapy ensures a better chemotherapy tolerance and prolonged life expectancy it can lead to an significant improvement in the supporting care for cancer patients”.

Every year over 45.000 runners from 121 different countries participate in the premier sporting event in the Netherlands. In 2011 Amsterdam UMC, CCA was chosen as charity partner of the Amsterdam Marathon sponsored by TCS, a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions firm. Amit Kapur, CEO of TCS Benelux, comments “it is fantastic that this year, as sponsor of TCS Amsterdam, we can contribute to this research that investigates the effect of physical exercise during cancer treatment”.

The TCS Amsterdam Marathon will take place on Sunday October 21st, 2018.
