Food scientist and LASA researcher Hanne van Ballegooijen has won the James Lind Prize 2018

Award for vitamin research

Food scientist and LASA researcher Hanne van Ballegooijen has won the James Lind Prize 2018 in the category 'most influential nutritional research on vitamins and minerals'. With data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam she looked at the relationship between low vitamin D and vitamin K levels and high blood pressure. Van Ballegooijen will use the price of 5.000 euros for follow-up research.

In the LASA study, data is collected about vitamin D and vitamin K levels in the participants' blood. Blood pressure was also measured every 3 years from 2002 until 2012. With this information, Dr. Hanne van Ballegooijen checked whether there was a connection between a low level of the two vitamins and high blood pressure. That turns out to be the case. This is important knowledge because a combination of vitamin D with vitamin K may help to prevent high blood pressure.
