Nursing homes struggle with addressing the problem of inappropriate sexual behavior in people with dementia. However, the subject is surrounded with taboos and not many studies have been conducted on the topic. In 2017, twenty (suspected) incidents in nursing homes were reported to the ‘Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd (IGJ)’.
A contributing issue is the current shortage of staff in nursing homes; “it is well known that dementia leads to loss of decorum, when interference is too late”, says Professor in Elderly Care, Tineke Abma, from VUmc. Through the shortage and the difficult behavior of people with dementia supervision to guarantee the safety of the residents is not always sufficient in nursing homes.
