Title: Technology Drivers and Opportunities for High Channel Count Electrophysiology

Abstract: The success of Neuropixels, in raising the quality and volume of single unit recording, along with the strong funding for tools from the NIH BRAIN initiative has created durable interest in the space. Neuropixels was a conservative engineering strategy to exploit state of the art semiconductor fabrication. I will review the technology used for recording sensors and talk about the origin of limits for various generations of those devices. I will put Neuropixels technology in that context and discuss paths for extending the fabrication capability. The contribution of Neuropixels was a dense large array. The value and practicality of more density is unclear. The ability to cover more tissue, much higher channel count probes, and combining with other functionality such light sources, electrical stimulation and photometry will be included. I would like to stimulate a discussion about value vs complexity for these multifunctional probes.
