The treatment of low back pain varies a lot throughout the world. This is discussed in a series of three papers published in the Lancet in March 2018 by an international group of authors. Overall, a conservative approach is recommended, and whereas in the US surgery is common, these often tackle only the symptoms, not the cause of the problem. Exercise is recommended as one of the better solutions, as is full participation in life.
Maurits van Tulder is one of the authors in Lancet’s Viewpoint, the third paper in the series: Low back pain: a call for action where they challenge international and national policy makers, clinicians and systems to change existing practice, behavior and systems as low back pain claims an increasing portion of the world’s health budgets.
